New topic: “Puppy can't seem to control bladder ever since she was spayed!” by simplep1xie

We have 2 west highland pups (1 male and 1 female) aged 9 months who were neutered and spayed when they were 6 months old. Since then the female can't seem to control herself and wees when she gets too excited and worryingly she recently lay down on her blanket and as she did so she wee'd all over her own back legs. We are concerned that maybe something happened during her operation that has resulted in weak bladder control - is this possible or is there is another reason she is doing this? Other than these accidents both pups are pretty much totally house trained now and he especially will always 'ask' to get outside. Any ideas please?

Jester, my long legged Jack Russel Terrier is nearly 12, and generally in good health. I left home just over 2 years ago and couldn´t bring him with me and left him with my Mum. Against everyones advice, she bought a Rhodesian Ridgeback puppy last year, which quite upset Jester - suddenly having a little brother, but 3 times the size. It totally chanaged his personality and they started to fight alot. My Mum (who isn´t quite right sometimes) wanted to put him down! I decided to (break my tenancy rules) and bring him here (Two weeks ago). Two days later he suddenly developed a limp, which got worse over night and he was very distressed (right front leg). I couldnt take him to the Vets (work commitments), and had to leave him with my Mum, begging her not to put him down (sorry this is becoming an essay!!). The vet said he had an injury to his elbow joint that was playing up, gave him a painkilling injection and some painkillers. A few days later the Vet rang back and said, after looking at his Xray, it looked like arthritis. We got more painkillers, with instructions to drop him down to half dosage (Tuesday just gone) - which I did. He has been fine, really happy, sociable, energetic and back to his old self. Today he started limping again, its not got an awful lot worse (tho I rightly or wrongly put his dose back up again). I´ve been giving him cod-liver oil and glyco-flex for about 10 days. I really dont know what to do. Hes not insured and I cant afford the vets bills, but I really dont seen putting him down as an option as hes such a happy, loving little dog, and the rest of him is totally fine. Any ideas?

I have a king charles cavalier x sheltie, about 8 years old. I've noticed over the past 2 to 3 years during winter she is VERY energetic and on the go and during the warmer months she becomes noticeably slower and seems tired, I've had other dogs before but never noticed this. This year - only march now and not yet warm and she's gone really slow already over a matter of weeks. Walks doesn't seem to exite her anymore. My concern is the relatively quick switch between states. Her coat length is comparible to a border collie and she's got short ears like a collie.

New topic: “IDIOPATHIC VESTIBULAR SYNDROME – MEDICAL RESEARCH” by spangle

IDIOPATHIC VESTIBULAR SYNDROME – MEDICAL RESEARCH

Has your dog been diagnosed with Idiopathic Vestibular Syndrome?

In May this year my English Springer Spaniel had his first episode, he was referred by my Vet to a Small Animal Hospital with suspected brain tumor. Thorough investigation and MRI scan failed to detect any tumor although a cyst was found on his pituitary gland. He was released with the diagnosis being IDIOPATHIC VESTIBULAR SYNDROME and HORNERS DISEASE. Since then he has had a further four episodes, recovering from each one within a week or two. His last episode being quite severe, he was off his feet for several days having to be hand fed, and catheterized. Today, aged fourteen and a half, he is still slightly wobbly on his feet, although this may be down to his arthritis, but more or less back to the happy chap he normally is.

For some time now I have been attempting to find others who have experienced similar, through posts on Web forums I have discovered others who have been in a similar situation. Peter and Maureen Caulfield have had first hand experience of dealing with this condition from their own pet Meg, very sadly Meg passed some weeks ago (not from IVS). Having learned of a high number of similar cases, they have been actively involved in researching IVS and have approached many Universities in an attempt to ignite medical research into this condition, from their hard work and tireless efforts they have been in contact with a Professor of Neurology at Cambridge University who is interested in conducting some research into this condition. For this, input is needed from as many sources as possible to aid research. In order to drive forward this research data is required from owners of pets who have suffered from this condition.

The information needed should include:

Pet Breed, Sex and Age
Any known medical conditions of your pet i.e. Heart murmur, Arthritis etc
Any impairments from episodes i.e. Balance, hearing, vocal, sight, head, appetite, head tilt etc
The period between attacks i.e. The period between first and second and so on
The treatment/medication given to your pet

Effectively as much information as possible!

Typically this condition involves your pet being wobbly on their feet, dizzy, the head tilts, the pet can circle when on their feet, sickness, diarrhea, nystagmus (eye flickering horizontally)

If you are able to help please forward details to Peter and Maureen who are co-ordinating all data to forward to Cambridge, they can be contacted via email (petercaulfield@msn.com).

Meantime, I’d be only too happy to discuss my pets recovery and episodes with any others who have experienced similar, one thing I have learnt is that not only is this condition stressful to your pet, but indeed yourself.

Thank you for reading and we hope you can help,

David Scott

Hi,my 14 year old gsd x has not been very well today. When she got up she was making a retching noise, like something was stuck in her throat. She has been doing it on and off all day and was sick a couple of times. She didn't eat much dinner and is lying down(not unusual!)However, everytime she lifts her head she is retching. My colleague said her dog used to do that after fresh chicken, which Zara had last night.Could it be that or something else?
